Self coaching guide: May the force be with you

June 28, 2017

I re-watched the Star Wars movies - after more than 30 years...What a treat! and oh so strange too....for as I re-lived the brilliance of the movie I was drawn to the wisdom of Master Yoda and recognised how much they resonated with some of my coaching philosophies and principles. Here is one of my favourite scenes with Yoda training Luke Skywalker. Read it for fun and for galvanising some aspect of your life.

The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Scene: Luke's spacecraft has just submerged in the slushy waters and he exclaims to Yoda, 'Oh no...We will never get it out now.'

Yoda: 'So certain are you..' He sighs, 'Always with you what cannot be done.. Do you nothing that I say?'

Luke: 'Master moving stones around is one thing. This is totally different.'

Yoda strikes his staff to the ground. 'No. No different. Only different in your mind. You must unlearn what you have learnt'

Luke: 'Oh alright I will give it a try.'

Yoda: 'No. Try not. Do or Do not. There is no try.'

Luke uses his emerging Jedi powers to lift the spacecraft out of the slushy waters...the craft lifts off a little and then falls back as Luke sits back in resignation next to Yoda. 'I can't. Its too big.'

Yoda: 'Size matters not. Look at me...Judge me by my size, do you? Hmm? Hmm. And well you should not. For my ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. You must feel the Force around you; here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere, yes. Even between the land and the ship.'

Luke: 'You want the impossible,' as he walks away in despair. As he does, Yoda draws on his powers and lifts the spacecraft straight out of the water onto the dry land without any help. Luke returns astounded and exclaims incredulously, 'I don't believe it!'

Yoda: 'That is why you fail.'

Ah! Master Yoda. The legendary wise one, indeed.

Much wisdom here, there is. Change something, it might.

5 Self-Coaching Questions for you
Think about a current goal (or life in general)
  1. Do you have a voice inside you that says something in the lines of 'you cannot do it. you are not good enough. you do not deserve this. you are too weak?' Find a phrase you can replace it with because our thoughts govern our energy and actions.
  2. List three things you need to unlearn that can springboard you to achieving any goal in less time and with less stress?
  3. Think about some of your current actions and words regarding a current goal. Are you saying and thinking that you are trying rather than doing... More important are you thinking that you are 'trying' rather that 'doing'?
  4. On a scale of 1-10 how connected do you feel with the world around you, the circumstances and the belief that you are are not alone? 10 being absolutely connected and 1 being not at all. Make sure you have an ally in life and something you draw your energy from.
  5. What are you current beliefs regarding your life, your goals - positive or negative? Are any of them coming in the way of success? Or can you reframe any of them that might help you get to your goal faster? If yes, what is the revised actions?

Take Action. Make a change and May the force be with you.
